For the last 14 years, the Square Lake Film & Music Festival (an arts event in Minnesota, USA) has created a unique, one-of-a-kind identity amongst North American festivals because it encourages attendees to arrive by bike, thereby allowing the event to occur in a secluded location. More than half the attendees bike 130 kilometers round trip to/from the festival to experience a day full of music, film and community.
The event was designed after attending remote, mixed media arts festivals on the island of Hokkaido, in northern Japan. The event employs a “less is more” philosophy and attracts around 500 attendees per year. The event has grown into a year round arts organization, now exporting these films out to an international setting, starting with 6 Assagao!
