Empowering women artisans of Kutch | Screening and Discussion | Nov 20th, 2017, 7-10 pm| 6 Assagao

Tracing the story behind the origins of Shrujan – Threads of Life, a creative not-for-profit organisation that empowers women artisans in Kutch, this documentary is compelling. It begins in 1969 when Shrujan’s founder Mrs. Chanda Shroff visited the Dhaneti village after the fourth drought ravaged the region. Though times were tough, the village women were reluctant to accept charity. Instead, they were searching for a means of sustainable livelihood. When Chandaben saw the exquisite hand embroidery displayed on their clothing, she saw a way to enable them to earn a dignified livelihood. This was the beginning of Shrujan, an organisation that won its founder @Rolex Award for Enterprise, Cultural Heritage.

Today, Shrujan works with over 4000 women artisans from over 14 communities spread across Kutch. And they create beautiful works of art and beauty that has found admirers across the world.

The documentary will be followed by a Q&A by Ami Shroff, Director, Shrujan.
